Clarice Modeste-Curwen has exhibited the focused dedication necessary for someone who wishes to achieve his or her maximum potential. Every stage of her life has been a step forward in the ultimate accomplishment of the goals she has set for herself.
Clarice received her secondary school education at the St. Rose Secondary School. Upon Graduation she entered the teaching profession when she became the Science Teacher at the Waltham Junior Secondary School during the period 1972 to 1979. While she was a teacher, she also attended the St. Lucia Teachers Technical Training College. In 1980 Clarice left the teaching profession to attend the University of Havana Medical School. This period marked her development of her personal field of expertise, which would guide her achievements in future years.
In 1987 she began her internship at the General Hospital and in 1989 she moved on to the position of House Officer. In 1996 she re-entered the teaching profession when she tutored Clinical Skills/Behavioural Sciences at the St. George’s University School of Medicine. She became the Registrar Ophthalmology in 1997. Clarice Modeste-Curwen is always looking for greater challenges whilst trying to make the most significant contribution she can to her homeland. It was in this frame that she entered the realm of politics.
Clarice, in an effort to transform the health sector in Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique, became the Junior Minister in the Ministry of Health in November of 1998. Clarice was victorious at the General Elections of 1999 and became the Constituency Representative for St. Mark’s. After the General Elections, she was promoted to the position of Minister and she currently holds the title of Minister of Health and the Environment.
Clarice has also been a contributing member to a number of organisations including the Grenada Medical Association – Secretary, Vice-President, Prevention of Blindness Committee, Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness, Pan American Health Organisation – President and the World Health Organisation – 1st Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board. She has written a number of Publications including Eye Care Tips for Prevention of Blindness, Pamphlets on Diabetic Retinopathy and Glaucoma and The Importance of Culture in HIV/AIDS Prevention in Grenada. For her dedicated work in the area of eye care, Clarice was given an award from the Caribbean Council for the Blind for outstanding services to Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique in the area of Prevention of Blindness.
As can be easily seen, there is no one better qualified for the position of looking after the health of Grenada. Clarice has earned respect locally, regionally and internationally. She has contributed significantly to life in the Constituency of St. Mark’s, being a member of the St. Mark’s Development Committee – Cultural Co-ordinator as well as being an advisor to the St. Mark’s Women’s Organisation in addition to fostering community education in eye care and training nurses in this area. St. Mark’s could not ask for a better Representative and the nation could not ask for a better Minister of Health. In the upcoming General Elections make the right choice.
